Melbourne in summer is a beautiful place to be, especially when you’ve braced the brutal Melbourne winter in a dilapidated weather-board house huddled by a gas heater and living off soup, coffee and the warmth of a laptop, partner or pet keeping you sane. Alternatively maybe you’ve returned from warmer climates; tanned and inspired by epically large festivals in the European summer, still feeling the dust in your blood from the Nevada Desert, or seriously re-considering the cult you joined while up in Byron. Either way Melbourne summer means Festival Season has landed!
– Stop taking life seriously, that was for winter. Summer is a perfect time to be cheeky as fuck, get theatrical and be free from our minds and live in the moment <3
– Sort your essentials: A van or pop-up tent, an amazing vessle (cup), an esky, sunglasses + dress-ups.
– Go on a road-trip. My god there are some amazing spots out there, go for a drive in any direction and you’ll find magic, from waterfalls, to giant sand-dunes, to deserted beaches. It’s also a great way to stretch out the missions to interstate festivals, which for this season, our pick is definitely the Earth Freq 10 Year Anniversary.
– Party sustainably 🙂 Getting loose is hella fun but it’s also awesome to be creative and know how to enjoy the scene naturally.
– Finally… marry a fluffy toy or pet. Human Relationships are tricky, and what a better open-minded scene to introduce your beloved fluffy toy or Lobster Husband at and not be judged.
If you’re already keen as mustard to get amongst it then STRAWBERRY FIELDS kicks off the festival season this weekend! They have seriously upped their production over the last few years, and have evolved into an epic, creative festival with a diverse international line-up and incredible decor and sound!
‘HOLD UP! Your coming on too strong buddy. Maybe you want to take your time, take things slow and get to know the Festival Season as a person first. If so the week after there is the beautiful FESTIVAL OF COLOURS at Ceres Environment Park. Shipping over from India bags full of coloured powder made from organic vegetables, the festival is a great way to connect with people from all walks of life while throwing coloured powder into their faces! A really fun day and also supporting a good cause of clean water programs in India <3
December starts off with one of the best kept secrets on the Festival Circuit, Folk Rhythm + Life, this year has already sold-out but it’s one worth researching to put on the map for future years. Solid community vibes and great diverse music. During December in Melbourne Town is Park Party season, look out for events at Edinburgh Gardens, Black Rock and Footscray but stay away from the city in this Month as the Christmas Virus has seriously taken it’s hold. Also check-out Viral Happiness, Edinburgh Gardens, Hoop O Clock and St Kilda night markets for creative park sessions with slack-line, circus and frisbee.
Once the New Year kicks in things really start getting wicked! To kick it off is LET THEM EAT CAKE on New Years Day, a party in a massive historic mansion on arguably the best Festival site in Melbourne. It feels like Alice in Wonderland meets the 1800’s all decked out in colorful decor and characters. It’s also a great way to start the year as instead of waking up coming down in an alleyway at 10am wondering why your hugging a rubbish bin, you get to rock out in the sun, get silly, and start the year feeling all over life and the year that lies ahead! Highly recommended!
Our Annual STACKS ON FESTIVAL is up next, On Jan 4th we take-over Ceres for a day with international acts, a jumping castle, cocktail bar, 2-stages, incredible decor and 1000 beautiful colorful people! We have a few awesome surprises this year and will be seriously upping the production! Kaboom! <3
We’re not sure what happens in between Stacks On and RAINBOW SERPENT FESTIVAL, it’s a weird time vortex that can only be remembered while it’s happening, pretty sure Queen the musical is retouring. Can’t wait! But yes… Rainbow has no doubt cemented itself as the most talked about festival of summer. A giant wacky, wild colorful international family reunion held for 4 days on a wicked site near Beaufort. Get yourself a bike, start training your bare feet, collect ridiculous costumes and go and get wild! Make sure you check out Beats Antique and James Copeland too and spend some time exploring the whole festival beyond the market floor which is so easy to make home 😀
In February a new outdoor techno-party has popped up called CHI WOW WAH TOWN. If you like your minimal tech and have partied in Berlin before, then check out this new Festival that brings some of this flavor to Australia! Closer to town also look out for NORTH CIDER festival held for the first time at CERES, a new collab between Pink Lady Cider + Strawberry Fields focusing more on the organic side of music in the scene 🙂
March things still haven’t slowed down with MAITREYA FESTIVAL taking place in the first week. While the Main-stage is dominated by Prog and Psy, they do it better then anyone on an incredible Funktion One Sound System and a rocking tribal dance-floor vibe which doesn’t give in for the whole festival. This year they will be upping their Techno Stage with more internationals and Culture Jam will be bringing a diverse range of acts to the Culture Jam Carnival on the Saturday 🙂 Plus they have a new site with swimming!
Finally to close off the season we are happy to announce we will be holding our first Festival over Easter on a beautiful site 2 hours from Melbourne. This will be a theatrical fully themed world, working with the incredible crew at Revolt Art-space on set-design and providing a diverse music line-up and lush camping. Look-out for concept drops and teasers over the coming month!
Big love guys and enjoy the silly season!!!!!!! Yew! 😀
